Does Zinc or Moss Killer Actually Stop Roof Moss?

Moss Removal

Moss removal from a roof in Chilliwack & Hope — Lucid Pressure Washing

Zinc strips and moss killers can help — but neither removes an established moss problem on its own. Here’s what each one realistically does.

Zinc strips can slow new moss growth, mostly on the section of roof directly below the strip, but they won’t remove moss that’s already established. Moss killers can kill existing moss, but the dead growth stays on the roof until it’s removed or weathers off. On a shaded Fraser Valley roof, both work best as maintenance after the moss has been properly cleared.

If you’ve got moss on your roof, you’ve probably seen zinc strips and moss-killer products at the hardware store and wondered whether they make hiring someone unnecessary. They’re not useless — but they’re often expected to do a job they weren’t designed for.

What zinc strips do

Zinc (or copper) strips are installed near the ridge. When it rains, a small amount of metal washes down the roof and makes the surface less hospitable to moss. The effect is strongest close to the strip and weakens further down the slope, so large roof sections, sections below dormers or valleys, and roofs with a lot of shade often still grow moss lower down.

  • Good for: slowing regrowth on a roof that has already been cleaned
  • Not good for: removing thick, established moss — it’s preventive, not a cleaner

What moss killers do

Spray-on moss killers can kill moss, and treated moss usually turns brown. But killed moss doesn’t disappear — it stays anchored to the shingles until rain and wind slowly break it down, or until it’s removed. Thick mats can take a long time to shed, and the debris ends up in your gutters. Follow the label carefully: some products can stain surfaces or harm plants if runoff isn’t managed.

The DIY mistakes that cause real damage

  • Pressure washing the roof — it strips shingle granules and can force water under the shingles
  • Scraping or wire-brushing hard — it removes granules along with the moss
  • Walking on a wet, mossy roof — it’s slippery and dangerous
  • Treating the moss but leaving the debris to wash into the gutters and downspouts

For more on why low-pressure methods are used on roofs, see soft wash vs pressure washing for roofs. And if the gutters are already overflowing from moss debris, here’s what’s going on.

What actually works on an established moss problem

Professional roof moss removal and demossing clears the heavier growth with roof-safe methods, then treats what’s left so it breaks down rather than being scraped off — without high pressure on the shingles. If the roof also has algae streaks or lichen, full roof cleaning covers the whole surface. Once the roof is clean, preventive steps like zinc strips, trimming overhanging branches and keeping valleys and gutters clear can help stretch the time before the next treatment.

Moss will eventually return on a shaded roof — here’s what controls how fast it comes back, and why waiting on moss removal can damage your roof.

FAQs

Can I install zinc strips myself?

Many homeowners do, but it means working on the roof. If the roof is steep, high or mossy, it’s safer to have it done as part of a professional cleaning.

Is baking soda a moss killer?

It’s a popular home remedy, but results vary and it doesn’t remove the moss that’s already there. Dead moss still has to break down or be cleared off.
